Bille 2011 (internal marginalization)

After reading a piece of write-up by one of our “Rivers Ijaw” scholar, Mr. Mac Innoma Diri, about how some communities in Degema LGA are marginalized by their own follow Ijaw folks. I now understand why Degema, one of Nigeria’s oldest LGA, still lack basic infrastructures and amenities, that some of its counterparts has. This internal marginalization have been on even before “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic (1999–present).” The communities are marginalized not because they don’t have qualified or educated personals that can hold key position in the LGA, but because of numerous and selfish internal reasons that is well known to those us of that are from the said LGA and other neighboring Ijaws. This is the same thing that is going on in Nigeria’s politics. If we as Rivers Ijaw, want to emerge as a “state,” there is a need for us to break away any form of internal marginalization, and be our brothers keeper. Continue reading →
